Remembering Tobe Hooper (25 Jan 1943 to 26 Aug 2017) and associated film makers Dan O’Bannon, Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan

I’m not claiming they and their films are the best, but that they and some of their films are among my favorites.

“William Tobe Hooper (January 25, 1943 – August 26, 2017) was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer best known for his work in the horror film genre; his most recognized films include The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist.” – Wikipedia.

“Daniel Thomas “Dan” O’Bannon (September 30, 1946 – December 17, 2009) was an American film screenwriter, director, visual effects supervisor, and occasional actor, usually in the science fiction and horror genres. O’Bannon is best known for having written the screenplay for Alien, adapted from a story he wrote with Ronald Shusett. He also contributed computer animation to Star Wars, worked on cult classics such as Dark StarHeavy Metal and Total Recall, and both wrote and directed the horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead. O’Bannon died from complications from Crohn’s disease in Los Angeles on December 17, 2009. O’Bannon credited his experiences with Crohn’s for inspiring the chest-bursting scene from Alien.” – Wikipedia.

I have suffered from most of the same symptoms but different causes including bleeding ulcers in esophagus and stomach, as well as Gerd and a Hiatal hernia, with such significant pain that it felt like an alien is about to jump out of my lower chest or upper stomach.

“Menahem Golan (Hebrew: מנחם גולן‎‎; May 31, 1929 – August 8, 2014) was an Israeli director and producer. He is best known as the co-owner, with his cousin Yoram Globus, of The Cannon Group, a company that specialized in low-to-mid budget American films during the 1980s after Golan and Globus achieved significant success as filmmakers in their native Israel during the 1970s. Golan produced movies featuring such stars as Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Charles Bronson, and was known for a period as a producer of comic book-style movies like Masters of the UniverseSuperman IV: The Quest for PeaceCaptain America, and his aborted attempt to bring Spider-Man to the silver screen. Using the pen name of Joseph Goldman, Golan also wrote and “polished” film scripts. Golan produced about 200 films, directed 44, and won eight Violin David Awards as well as The Israel Prize in Cinema.” – Wikipedia.

Still alive, “Yoram Globus (Hebrew: יורם גלובוס‎‎; born 7 October 1943) is an Israeli film producer, cinema owner and distributor who is most famous for his association with Cannon Films Inc., a company he ran with his cousin Menahem Golan.” – Wikipedia.

Lifeforce is a 1985 British science fiction horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Dan O’Bannon and Don Jakoby, based on Colin Wilson‘s 1976 novel The Space Vampires. Featuring Steve RailsbackPeter FirthFrank FinlayMathilda May, and Patrick Stewart, the film portrays the events that unfold after a trio of humanoids in a state of suspended animation are brought to Earth after being discovered in the hold of an alien space ship by the crew of a European space shuttle. The film received negative reviews on release. It grossed $11.6 million in the U.S. Produced by Yoram Globus and Menahem Golan.” – Wikipedia.

LIFEFORCE is certainly not the best science fiction movie of all time, but it continues to be my number one favorite of all time. No doubt what prevented it from being the success it should have been is the full nudity scenes of Mathilda May as the female vampire – of the space vampires who take the lifeforce of souls to live on as well as fuel for their partly organic starship – like the construction of the ship in the ALIEN and ALIENS movies. The critics also griped about the combining of space aliens, vampires, and zombies making it too confusing – “I have no f-ing idea what this movie is about.” – one of the critics complained.

Really, it is somewhat simple, but with a few complicated twists. Space Shuttle Churchill with a British crew and American commander is sent to Haley’s Comet as it is passing through our solar system. In the tail of the comet a massive alien starship is discovered as if abandoned there. A team finds a way into it to discover bat-like creatures, all dead. Also three humanoids apparently in prism glass like hibernation chambers in suspended animation, still alive. All are nude in their chambers. Two males and one female. They are taken aboard the Churchill along with a sample of the dead bat-like creatures. They head back to Earth. All of the crew except the commander slowly die as if the life is being drained out of them. The commander survives as he is attracted to the female alien. Their minds are briefly linked and he discovers what the aliens are. He attempts to destroy the Churchill and uses an escape pod to return to Earth – where he is rescued upon landing in Texas. Meantime, the Churchill survives as do the three aliens. Upon entering Earth orbit the British send up a team to find out what happened. They bring the three aliens down to London, still in their hibernation chambers, from which the aliens eventually emerge. The aliens began to attack the humans, taking the lifeforce out of them instead of blood, but are later compared by a scientists to vampires who believes they are the vampires of legend having visited Earth in the past with each visit of Haley’s Comet. When the lifeforce is taken from humans, the humans then become like Walking Dead zombies! London is destroyed. The commander of the Churchill is returned to England to advise the British forces fighting the space vampires and the human zombies. The female vampire has the ability to move her soul to humans abducting bodies to use them and to hide in, including Patrick Stewart has top doctor at an insane asylum. The commander of the Churchill played by Steve Railsback finally confronts the female vampire with a final mind link. With a special sword acquired, he kills her . . . and himself – having discovered he has an alien soul, is one of them, and that is why the female vampire could not harm him. Apparently his alien soul was somehow left behind on Earth during the previous visit by Haley’s Comet, trapping him into human reincarnations until the alien ship would return. Even so, death is not death for such aliens, as their souls are transported aboard the alien starship in Earth orbit. Then the starship returns to the tail of Haley’s Comet. As for the two male space vampires, their deaths earlier in the story appear to be a permanent kind of death from which their alien souls did not survive.

As a fan of ANCIENT ALIENS on The History Channel, and the CHARIOTS OF THE GODS? book authored in 1968 by Erich von Däniken, I believe aliens have visited Earth in the past several times. Further, I believe that when some of them have died here their alien souls have been reincarnated into Earth human life to then continue to introduce alien technology into our history causing great and sudden progress by humans. For example, Einstein probably had a reincarnated alien soul.

WARNING: Brief nudity in the following movie trailer for Lifeforce…

As a fan of movie theme music soundtracks, this is one of my favorites…
