Navy SEALs Yemen Raid and Ryan Owens Controversy

A Special Editorial Article by Jim Lantern

Thursday morning, 2 March 2017

“The Pentagon says Navy SEALs scooped up laptops, hard drives and cell phones in last month’s Yemen raid, but multiple U.S. officials told NBC News that none of the intelligence gleaned from the operation so far has proven actionable or vital — contrary to what President Trump said in his speech to Congress Tuesday.” – NBC News, 1 March 2017.

Dying in vain refers to someone who sacrifices themselves for a cause, and their sacrifice ends up not helping. For example, a person who sacrifices themselves to save a child, but then the child dies anyway, is said to have died in vain.” – Quora.

The point President Trump was trying to make is that Navy SEAL Owens did not die in vain. That was done mainly for the benefit of the widow and family of Ryan Owens.

Actionable intelligence. Do we want our enemies to know what we know about them? Do we want our enemies to know that we have acquired any actionable intelligence about them, and what it specifically is? Do we want our enemies to know what we are going to do with such actionable intelligence, such as planning an attack on an enemy at a certain time and date as well as where? Like, because of actionable intelligence gained, we know of a secret base of an enemy at certain coordinates, which we will bomb at a certain time on a certain date. Do we want our military plans to be leaked to mainstream news media? Do we want the mainstream news media to publish secret military plans?

Fact is, because it happens so often that it is now routine, our enemies need only watch TV (or read such news stories via Internet), such as presented by NBC News and CNN as a couple of examples. Our enemies are watching and reading the same news sources as everyone else. Individuals – “sources” – leaking secret information, and then the mainstream news media publishing that secret information, amounts to a spy network, which makes such sources and publishers guilty of giving aid to an enemy. Freedom of Speech does not protect those who are guilty of treason. President Trump is right to refer to such people and news organizations as being the “enemy of the American people.”

Previously, during the presidential campaign, Trump said, “I don’t want to broadcast to the enemy exactly what my plan is.” Trump’s position was in reaction to the reports that “Obama Warned Islamic State 45 Minutes Before U.S. Airstrikes.” Excerpts from Breitbart

  • It appears the Pentagon is struggling with the same moral dilemma that confronts Israel in its own war on terror: How to minimize civilian casualties without compromising the aims of airstrikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in urban areas.
  • Social media is ablaze with claims that the Obama administration “tipped off” Islamic State terrorists 45 minutes before the U.S. Air Force destroyed 116 tanker trucks in the Al-Bukamal province of Iraq. The strike was intended to reduce ISIS’s ability to transport stolen oil products.
  • The Pentagon’s Operation Inherent Resolve Spokesman Colonel Steve Warren told reporters that before the mid-November airstrike, the military dropped leaflets warning truckers, “Get out of your trucks now, and run away from them.”
  • The air force also made low passes to warn of impending strikes and announced in another leaflet: “Warning: airstrikes are coming. Oil trucks will be destroyed. Get away from your oil trucks immediately. Do not risk your life.”
  • Warren told reporters at a November 18 briefing: ‘This is our first strike against tanker trucks, and to minimize risks to civilians, we conducted a leaflet drop prior to the strike. We did a show of force, by – we had aircraft essentially buzz the trucks at low altitude.”

This is not a historically traditional war of enemy soldiers in uniform so that any attackers will not kill civilians by mistake. In this war against terrorism – against terrorists and their goals, the enemy soldiers deliberately wear normal clothing to blend in with civilians, so that it is nearly impossible to see the difference between the enemy soldiers and noncombatant civilians.

NBC News reports: “SEAL, American Girl Die in First Trump-Era U.S. Military Raid.” American girl? She was the “8-year-old daughter of Anwar al-Awlaki, the New Mexico-born al Qaeda leader who himself was killed in a U.S. strike five years ago.”

“An MV-22 Osprey experienced a hard landing near the site, injuring several SEALs, one severely. The tilt-rotor aircraft had to be destroyed. A SEAL was killed during the firefight on the ground, as were some noncombatants, including females.” Females, as if being female makes the deaths a crime. Let’s not forget terrorists include females who carry guns and others who become suicide bombers. Worse, terrorist have started using children – giving them guns and turning them into bombers. Therefore, we can’t be overly concerned about civilian casualties in this kind of a war, because such concerns can result in our own soldiers being killed. A “senior military official said the 8-year-old girl, Nawar al-Awlaki, also known as Nora, was among the noncombatants killed in the raid, which also resulted in the death of several Yemeni women. U.S. officials said some of the women who were killed, however, were combatants and had opened fire on the SEALs as they approached the al Qaeda camp.” Even so, NBC News would slant the truth to make it sound horrible that women and children were killed, as an attempt to make President Trump look bad.

CNBC reported: “A senior Congressional official briefed on the matter said the Trump administration has yet to explain what prompted the rare use of American ground troops in Yemen, but he said he was not aware of any new threat from al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the al Qaeda affiliate that was targeted.” Seriously? “Not aware of any new threat from al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the al Qaeda affiliate that was targeted.” – as if a new specific threat is necessary to justify any military action against al Qaeda (or ISIS or any other enemy). Fact is, the existence of al Qaeda (and ISIS and other terrorists and enemies) makes them a constant threat wherever they are! Just their existence justifies defensively attacking them relentlessly wherever they are until all of them have been exterminated. Finally, we have a President who understands that, and will be using military commanders who know how to get the job done. No more liberal pussyfooting politics getting in the way of winning a war.

Present-day liberal Democrats continue to engage in despicable behavior. The act as if our President and our own soldiers are the enemy. The care more about enemies being killed than they do about our own soldiers. They care more about the families of fallen enemies than they do about widows of ow own soldiers killed in action.

The Dan Grilo incident, indicating in a tweet at Twitter that the widow of Navy SEAL Ryan Owens is an “idiot” for attending President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night 28 February 2017. Freedom of Speech allows such opinions, but such remarks amount to willful evil. Grilo isn’t the only bad behaving Democrat. The Blaze reported, “The widow of the American Sniper Chris Kyle is speaking out against critics like Michael Moore who say Carynn Owens let President Trump take advantage of her grief for his political advantage.”

In contrast, The Daily Beast gets it right: “America Needs a Moral Compass? Navy SEAL Widow Carryn Weigand Owens Is It.” Excerpts…

  • Six days after she buried her husband— the father of their four children—at Arlington National Cemetery, Carryn Weigand Owens sat across the Potomac River in the Capitol as President Trump and both houses of Congress joined in applauding her.
  • Part of what made the moment so searing for anybody of any political persuasion who witnessed it on television was that Carryn’s immeasurable grief and anguish were so fresh and raw.

Excerpts from ABC News…

  • The televised moment moved a nation: A grief-stricken widow clasping her hands and looking skyward, tears streaming down her face as the nation’s lawmakers and president delivered a deafening standing ovation in honor of her fallen husband.
  • President Donald Trump’s tribute to Navy SEAL William “Ryan” Owens during Tuesday’s congressional address was seen by many as touching. But others regarded it as a calculated attempt to deflect criticism of his decision to approve a failed military operation and to turn around his administration’s shaky start with a gesture that sought to unify a deeply divided country.
  • Social media was abuzz with both praise and criticism.
  • Trump was praised on Twitter as giving “the greatest respect to Carryn Owens” and for moving “viewers to tears with his love for our fallen military.”
  • But others said Trump was responsible for Owens’ death and criticized the “exploitation of his widow for last night’s dog and pony show.”

Why not blame al Qaeda for the death of Owens? Why blame Trump?

Those who care more about the welfare of our enemies than they do about the welfare of our own people should be banished from our country, lose their citizenship, and be deported along with illegal aliens. Let them go live with the enemies they are so fond of.

Fruits of the raid?

More than 20 US airstrikes conducted in Yemen overnight

The airstrikes involved a mix of manned and unmanned aircraft, a U.S. official told ABC News. The strikes, in the three Yemeni provinces of Al Baydah, Abyan and Shabwa, targeted al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) infrastructure.
