EMERALD CITY – Stunning new NBC TV series begins Friday night 6 January 2017

There have been a few remakes and variations of The Wizard of OZ, none of which impressed me, but this new version has serious dramatic impact – what I’ve seen in the preview video. What I mean by that is like the huge dramatic difference between the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica and the much more serious 2004 version.

From TV Guide, the first two episodes Friday night 6 January 2017…

Emerald City

The Beast Forever; Prison of the Abject – 8:00 PM CT on KFOR 4 [NBC TV], 2 hours – 2017, TV-14
  • A tornado occurs while Dorothy searches for her mother, and the storm transports Dorothy to a mystical land where she finds a soldier with amnesia in the series premiere of this combined episode of a dark, modern reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz.”

From Wikipedia…

  • Emerald City is an upcoming American fantasy television series based on the Land of Oz book series written by L. Frank Baum. A 10-episode first season was ordered straight to series by NBC in April 2015, which is to premiere on January 6, 2017.
  • After being transported from Kansas to the Land of Oz by a tornado, Dorothy Gale sets out to find the Wizard, unaware that she is about to fulfill a prophecy that will change everyone’s lives forever.

Only one actor listed is familiar to me, and is an interesting surprise: Vincent D’Onofrio as The Wizard.

I nearly missed knowing about this. I’d not seen it advertised on NBC TV. It is the ad at the TV Guide website that got my attention, while up late this Thursday night. Checking TV guide to see what is on this late at midnight as heavy snow begins to fall here in Norman Oklahoma – I’ve been monitoring the weather tonight.
