GULF SURVIVAL QUEST TREK

  • Gulf –  Gulf of Mexico, U.S. gulf states, my preferred general destination area.
  • Survival – Continuing to stay alive during difficult circumstances.
  • Quest – A long or arduous search for something.
  • Trek – A long arduous journey, especially one made on foot.

Come what may in September 2015…

I will officially become out-on-the-street homeless as of Friday 4 September 2015 – my rent is paid to that morning. Loss of affordable housing is the main cause of this situation. There’s no shelter for homeless men in Reno Nevada, just a charity serving noon meals to about 1500 homeless individuals every day. For health reasons, I must seek a warmer climate for the coming winter. “Cold air asthma” would likely cause my death here in Reno Nevada.

I have decided on a destination: Corpus Christi, Texas.

I get final SNAP food stamps $53 on Tuesday September 1st. Some of it is likely to be spent here in Reno before departure. The CHASE EBT card can be used at any store of any city in any state where food stamps are accepted.

Social Security Disability benefits $851 are usually direct deposited into my bank account on the 3rd of every month, unless the 3rd is on a holiday or weekend – then paid sooner. Even so, it was done sooner the past two months. If that happens again for September, then it could be done on the 1st or 2nd. If so, then I will depart Reno that day, unless the Greyhound Bus departure time is sold out – then I go the next departure time.

My plan is to check online for direct deposit usually 6:00 a.m. PT. When confirmed, then I’ll walk over to the ATM of the bank I use to get the maximum withdrawal of $500 in cash. I’ll get there about 6:30 a.m. PT. Then over at the Greyhound Bus station by 7:00 a.m. PT.

I’ll leave the balance – about $356 – in the account for future access from Corpus Christi. However, the Greyhound ticket purchase – could be as low as $170 to as high as $206 (current rates could change by departure date and time) – might be paid for with my debit card if not in cash.

The most likely departure date will be Thursday September 3rd, making the arrival date Saturday September 5th.

The most likely departure time on Route One will 8:30 a.m. PT, which will put me Corpus Christi at 10:15 a.m. CT after a 2-day trip. The next option, Route Two, departs 7:20 p.m. PT, which will put me in Corpus Christi at the late time of 11:15 p.m. CT on Saturday night.

Good Samaritan Rescue Mission

It’s not a normal homeless shelter. It’s more like the original versions of the YMCA and YWCA. Owned and managed by a church/religious organization, which does not accept government money so it is not controlled and restricted by use of government money. My present understanding is there’s a small charge for mats or bunk beds, similar to when the YMCA and YWCA long ago had a similar low charge for a meal and a cot for the night. The option is to do some volunteer work if you can’t pay for the bed. Includes three meals – breakfast, lunch, dinner. Unlike most homeless shelters it is open 124/7 for day and night sleeping – so someone working nights can sleep there days. If Greyhound Bus gets me into Corpus Christi at 11:15 p.m. CT instead of 10:15 a.m. CT, then I’ll not be shut out. There’s no curfew. The place includes other services for various needs – such as mailing address, Internet access, laundry, showers, and lockers. I’ve sent an email to the director there. Awaiting reply. This posting might be updated for the reply.

According to Sperling’s Best Places website date, crime is very low in Corpus Christi, climate is ideal for me, cost of living is within my budget, housing will fit my budget when I can find the right deal, and I might be able to find a doctor (MD) who still accepts new patients covered by Medicare.

I’ll open a new account at a bank there for SSD benefits direct deposit – next in October. I’ll have to contact the local welfare office to move SNAP food stamps and Medicaid from Nevada to Texas. I’ll get a Texas ID and register to vote there. My Oklahoma ID expires 31 October 2015 – from living in Norman from 3 May 2008 to 2 May 2015 – the place I lived at was sold and razed. I’ll upgrade clothing for the local climate. I’ll buy a bicycle with baskets on it for local transportation. I’ll need to buy a new Chromebook by the end of this year. I’ll continue to use this old one as long as possible and at locations where there is free Wi-Fi. I might seek the right person for a roommate deal there on a two-bedroom apartment when I’m ready to get back into apartment living, if I can’t find studio apartment for me within my budget.
