Launched 1 August 1981 – MTV (formerly an initialism of Music Television) is an American basic cable and satellite television channel owned by the Viacom Media Networks Music & Logo Group, a unit of the Viacom Media Networks division of Viacom. The channel itself is headquartered in New York City, and is a subsidiary of Viacom Inc. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by television personalities known as “video jockeys,” or VJs. In its early years, MTV’s main target demographic were young adults, but today, MTV’s programming is primarily targeted at adolescents and teenagers.
1 August 1981 was the day I first got cable TV at home. As it was being hooked up, the installer told me about the new MTV – Music Television – Channel starting that same day. I was age 25 then, working full-time in electronics repair work – my first profession spanning about 10 years.
I initially liked CNN and the original version of MTV the most. If a music video was on that I didn’t like, then I’d change the channel over to CNN to watch one or more news stories. I do miss the original version of MTV that mainly just played music videos, but now via Internet I can watch any music video I want to and do so at any time.
